Umberto Bortolotti Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Brut

Cantine Umberto Bortolotti Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Brut NV

Umberto Bortolotti's exquisite line of Proseccos, their non-vintage Valdobbiadene Brut is the sweetest of the line, all have feature attractive creaminess at the core and a mousse that is notably finer than most Proseccos I've tasted. It opens with a garland of white flowers, acacia honey and honeydew melon. Here, the creaminess is upfront, gradually subsiding to a saline-flecked mineral finish. 7 g/l, 11.5% ABV | Sample Cantine Umberto Bortolotti 9.0 Points...

Rive Di S. Stefano Montagnole

Cantine Umberto Bortolotti Rive Di S. Stefano Montagnole Valdobbiadene 2016

Umberto Bortolotti's stylish 2016 Rive Di S. Stefano Montagnole Valdobbiadene qualifies as one of the best Proseccos I've had in recent memory. Aromas of fresh Williams pear, green apple, and white grapefruit pith are held aloft by ultra-fine, diaphanous bubbles. At 2 g/l residual sugar, it feels perceptibly dry and crisp. Calcium-rich marl limestone soils have contributed to this wine's textural finesse and finish, amply infused with pear and old marine bones. 11.7% ABV | Sample Cantine Umberto Bortolotti 9.1 Points ...

Cantine Umberto Bortolotti Piai Alto Valdobbiadene Rive Di Rolle 2016

Cantine Umberto Bortolotti Piai Alto Valdobbiadene Rive Di Rolle 2016

From a single 2.65 ha parcel on the steep slopes of the Rive DOCG, the 2016 Umberto Bortolotti Piai Alto Valdobbiadene Rive Di Rolle is awash with delicate, tender aromas of acacia flowers, acacia honey, that swirl 'round white peach and Asian pear. It's round and creamy upfront, with a delicate honeyed character that can be felt on the nose, and all the way through to a meandering finish. 13.2 g/l, 11.6% ABV | Sample Cantine Umberto Bortolotti 8.9 Points  ...

La Marca Prosecco NV

La Marca Prosecco NV

La Marca Prosecco is a tasteful addition to any holiday table. A torrent of clinquant bubbles adds sparkle and elan to delicate aromas of yellow apple, lemon, white flowers, and acacia honey. This is a spritely, medium-bodied Prosecco graced with bright acidity, creamy texture, and a welcome burst of subtle minerality twining a pleasant bittersweet peach pit note on the finish. 11.29% ABV | Sample La Marca Prosecco 8.9 Points...

Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2012

Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2012

Hauled out of the cellar in anticipation of another waterlogged week in Portland, I've contented myself with Allegrini's classically styled Amarone della Valpolicella. The 2012 vintage, like the 2010 I sampled two years ago, is of similar richness and texture. Plums, aged leather, figs, and tar are denser notes that form the base and backbone of this wine. Wafting incense, spice, and sweet tobacco lend complexity along with black-tea steeped tannins and balsam that hit right at the mid-palate. Oh for a fireplace. 15.7% ABV | Sample Allegrini Azienda Agricola 9.2 Points...

Allegrini Palazzo della Torre Veronese IGT 2013

Allegrini Palazzo della Torre Veronese IGT 2013

A perennial favorite, the 2013 Allegrini Palazzo della Torre is nicely concentrated and magenta-hued, due in part to a small fraction of grapes dried ripasso-style blended in post-fermentation—an addition that lends both satiny texture and richness. Layered aromas of plums and cherry skins, leather, earth, tobacco, mint and dark chocolate shavings lead in to a wine with no hard edges. The tannins are mouth coating and fine along with moderate acidity and a long, savory finish. A great food wine. 13.8% ABV | Sample Allegrini Azienda Agricola 9.0 Points...

La Marca Prosecco NV

La Marca Prosecco NV

New Years on a budget? Consider La Marca's charming Prosecco. Lemon drop, apple blossom, acacia honey, and fresh marshmallow tumble from the glass, held aloft on a torrent of bubbles. The palate feels perceptibly drier than one might expect given the aromatic profile. Acidity keeps it light and lively, accenting the finish—a subtle mineral edge twining and a pleasant bittersweet twinge of peach pit. Sample Cantine LaMarca 8.9 Points...

Allegrini Palazzo della Torre Veronese IGT 2011

Allegrini Palazzo della Torre Veronese IGT 2011

The 2011 Palazzo della Torre is loaded with roasted figs (is this because I was just roasting figs? Maybe.) and sun baked plums. There is too, a beautiful earthy note, like dust in high summer, that echoes on the palate, lending complexity to high acidity and firm, ripe tannin along with an appealing touch of underbrush growing along a stony, arid hillside. Dried herbs on the finish and a touch of anise. Thyme, oregano. Definitely a food wine. Sample Allegrini Azienda Agricola 9.0 Points...

Pieropan Soave Classico 2014

Pieropan Soave Classico 2014

A lovely, spirited Soave Classico from the Veneto region, utterly fresh and bright with notes of Meyer lemon zest, white flowers, dried honey, and almond extract. Aged on fine lees in concrete, the effect of which is largely textural, lending minerally undertones of wet pomace, and slight autolytic character. A nice lingering finish. Clean and delicious, and I might add, great QPR. Societa' Agricola Pieropan Di Leonildo Pieropan & C. S.S. 9.1 Points...
