Lingua Franca Mimi's Mind Pinot Noir 2015

Lingua Franca Mimi’s Mind Pinot Noir 2015

Mimi’s Mind, so named to honor the work of Mimi Casteel, and her east-facing vineyard site of Woodburn, Nekia, and Jory type soils planted in the 1970s. I am told that the vines are own-rooted and phylloxera-free, making them a rarity in the Eola-Amity Hills. The 2015, dressed in a translucent ruby robe, is poised yet edgy—this wine struck me as the one in Lingua Frana's lineup with the most structure. Ultra-fine sueded tannins form the articulated spine of this wine's sous bois, dried orange peel, cola, and black-fruited core. Sample Lingua Franca 92 Points...

Brooks Rastaban Pinot Noir 2014

Brooks Rastaban Pinot Noir 2014

Showing beautifully, Brooks' 2014 Rastaban is named after one of the stars in the Draco constellation, derived from an Arabic phrase "Rās al-Thu`bān, or head of the serpent. 2014 is a riper, lusher vintage than the 2011, the last I sampled under this label—this striking estate-grown Pinot Noir presents a broad sensory arc of ripe raspberries, roasted strawberry and black cherries, sweet tobacco, and exotic spice. It's brooding, with a somewhat muscular frame. Earthy minerality and iron ore emerge on the finish. Sample Brooks 9.3 Points...

Brooks Sunset View Eola-Amity Hills Riesling 2014

Brooks is one of a handful of Oregon wineries to have mastered Riesling. Every year, they offer small lots of single vineyard Rieslings like this beauty from Sunset View Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA—the vineyard that sits at a 290' elevation on a south-facing slope. It's expressive, deliciously layered in white peach and golden apple resting well below lighter, more complex notes of freshly cut lemongrass, petrol and a pinch of white pepper. Vivid and fresh on entry, graced with minerality and acid in equal measure. 13.7% ABV | Sample Brooks 9.1 Points...

Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard Summum Chardonnay 2014

Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard Summum Chardonnay 2014

A pinnacle Oregon Chardonnay, the 2014 Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard Summum hails from a single block at the heart of the Seven Springs vineyard where the soil is thin and a stony basalt outcropping can be seen. The vines, all Dijon clones, were planted in 1984, and are naturally low yielding. Summum is stunningly pure, precise, and texturally elegant. A silken ribbon wrapped around a core of yellow apples and d'Anjou pear. Mandarin orange, lemon curd, pencil lead, followed by trace minerality—it's very Burgundian. Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard La Source Chardonnay 2014

Finely wrought and delicate, the 2014 Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard La Source Chardonnay shows off beautiful tapicity. If you're not convinced of Oregon's Chardonnay Renaissance, than do seek out a bottle from Evening Land. Orchard fruit, mandarin orange, and an ethereal top note that drifts from iodine to acacia flowers to mint. Stylish and self-possessed, with fleshy pear at the center balanced by bright acidic verve—the thrust is at the finish, underpinned by minerally, wet porcelain clay tones. Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard Gamay Noir 2015

Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard Gamay Noir 2015

Evening Land's Cru Beaujolais-like Gamay Noir is sourced from the oldest Gamay Noir vines in the country, planted in 1983—though I am told that there is also a younger block in the blend. In keeping with Beaujolais tradition, this is whole cluster carbonic fermentation in concrete, the effect of which is lovely. Pie cherries burst forth followed by brambly berries, vanilla, cola, and spice. It's fresh and bright, with tart cranberry-esque acidity leading into crushed stone and pomace. Evening Land Vineyards Seven Springs Estate Chardonnay 2014

Evening Land Seven Springs Estate Chardonnay 2014

Really lovely, the Evening Land Seven Springs Vineyard Chardonnay 2014 brings with it sense of refinement. Like a classically tailored blazer, its texture is soft but structured, underpinned by a layer fine tannins and bolstered by lithe and lovely notes of lemon zest and blanched almond, pencil shavings and orchard fruit. Under winemaker Sashi Moorman's direction even a warm year like 2014 feel reserved and just a little bit Burgundian. Sample Evening Land Vineyards 9.2 Points...

Evening Land Vineyards Seven Springs 'Anden' Pinot Noir 2014

Evening Land Seven Springs ‘Anden’ Pinot Noir 2014

A knee-weakening Pinot Noir, Evening Land's Seven Springs 'Anden' comes from fruit harvested in a single pass through a phylloxerated section of historic Seven Springs vineyard. The 2014 is whole cluster fermented and aged in 100% New oak—it would seem that there's a method to winemaker Sashi Moorman's madness in the rather unusual approach to this limited release—and it's spectacular. Raspberries, cranberries, orange peel and pomander ball are followed by crushed stones and a slightly piney note. It's pure and vivid, with an unwavering mineral thread that deftly ties it all together. And despite  liberal use of oak, it reads as a delicate albeit complex wine with beautifully integrated tannins. If you can find this one, and you can afford I say, go for it! 13.5% ABV | Sample Evening Land Vineyards 9.5 Points...

Domaine Serene Jerusalem Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013

Domaine Serene Jerusalem Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir 2013

Jerusalem Hill Vineyard lies a protected, south-facing slope, and I'm told it's one of the more moderate sites in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, lending more intense color and concentration—and that seems to be very accurate to the wine itself, which manages both poise and power. Sous bois, white pepper and dried sage along with fine, structured black-tea-esque tannins lend dimension to brambly red berries and savory black cherry notes. 13.5% ABV | Sample Domaine Serene 9.2 Points...
