El Enemigo Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary Cabernet Franc 2011

Blog

We sipped the 2011 El Enemigo Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Gualtallary Cabernet Franc blind and I thought it was perhaps from Italy, such is this wine’s enigmatic profile and finesse. A blend of 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec all sourced from high-density plantings in Gualtallary—the highest of the Valle de Uco’s viticultural sub-zones, in this case, the vines are planted at a dizzying 4,690 feet with roots that burrow deeply into poor chalky, low-fertility soils. Mulberries and black plums subside to more ethereal aromas of dusty earth, crushed violets, dried mint, and savory herbs. There are pulses of lovely fruit and mineral tones the mid-palate supported by an understory of fine tannins. Bright acidity awash with saline inflections, black tea, and spice speaks to how precisely it’s been crafted.
